Energy first for housing association in Wales

Newydd is the first housing association in Wales to install a fuel cell combined heat and power system to cut energy bills, carbon emissions and allow for electricity to be produced on site for use by tenants.

This new technology has been installed at Alltwen, an independent living scheme for people aged 55 and above, using BlueGEN, a system where heat and electricity is provided using the same product. This has meant that gas is used to produce energy at the housing scheme providing financial as well as environmental benefits.

BlueGEN is the first product to apply this technology in the UK and receive feed in tariff. It generates electricity as efficiently as a large modern gas-fired power station but unlike a power station transmission losses are avoided and the heat that is generated can also be used, providing the most efficient method of using gas to create usable energy.

Dave Perry, Property Manager at Newydd said, “We are excited about this new technology installed at Alltwen in Abernant and look forward to passing on the cost savings to our tenants. We are hoping that our use of this combined system won’t stop there as we have plans to install BlueGEN at our other independent scheme in the near future.”

Fuel cell combined heat and power systems are well established, with many thousands of installations completed in Japan and Germany. However, it is a lot less well known in the UK.

This unit was made by SOLIDpower, supplied by iPower with support from Ynni Glan in Wales and installed by the local company Ecofit Energy Systems.

Guto Owen, of Ynni Glan, iPower representative in Wales, said, “With electricity prices increasing more than gas prices, this technology is becoming increasingly attractive. We are getting increased interest from many sectors across Wales including housing associations and local authorities.”

Jon Cape, Managing Director of iPower said “We were delighted to have worked with Newydd Housing Association and Ecofit on this project. Besides saving money, BlueGEN cuts carbon emissions and can also help cut local air pollution which we know is an increasing public health concern.”

Welsh Council Fuels the Future

Good news on the energy front. Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council has found a way to cut to energy bills and carbon emissions.

The technology, Fuel Cell Micro Combined Heat and Power, is well established, with many thousands of installations completed in Japan and Germany. But it is a lot less well known in the UK.

The first product to apply this technology in the UK and receive Feed In Tariff is called BlueGEN. BlueGEN generates electricity as efficiently as the best large modern gas-fired power station – but unlike a power station the heat that is generated can be used as well so providing the most efficient method of using gas to create usable energy.

Jon Arroyo, the Council’s Energy Manager said: “We installed our first BlueGEN in November 2013. The unit went into a 26 bed residential care home alongside a 15kW solar array. The BlueGEN provided a payback of under seven years. We have been delighted with the BlueGEN’s operation and have now installed a further ten units in other similar properties and a school, leisure centre, library and office. Seven of these installations have just been completed.”

The units were made by SOLIDpower and were supplied by UK BlueGEN distributor, iPower and installed by the local company Ecofit Energy Systems.
Guto Owen, of Ynni Glan, iPower representative in Wales, said “Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has been a fantastic customer for BlueGEN in its early stages. There is now a strong business case for BlueGEN and we are finding growing interest amongst local authorities and many others. Reliable and practical with no planning issues and no air pollution, fuel cells make a compelling case for generating clean, on-site energy.“

Mike McDonald, Commercial Manager at Ecofit Energy Systems said “As a local company we have been delighted to have supported the Council with installation of seven BlueGENs in recent weeks. We were working to a tight deadline and have shown BlueGEN to be a real, practical choice. We look forward to serving a growing market for BlueGENs in Wales and England.“

iPower’s Managing Director, Jon Cape, said, “Feed In Tariff has now been confirmed for two years to March 2019 and, along with grant available for the same period to support installation cost, BlueGEN can play a cost effective part in reducing both energy bills and carbon emissions”.

BlueGen Seminar at Edinburgh Napier

An excellent event was held last week to begin the promotion of our unique fully funded BlueGen, the first micro CHP product in the UK to be eligible for the Feed in Tariff (Fits), which we think will help people turn buildings from energy burdens to energy opportunities.

Al Boiler Room

Around seventy delegates turned up to be shown around the installed BlueGen unit in Napier’s Merchiston campus, where Alistair Roberts explained the mechanics of the BlueGen unit. BlueGen generates power at 60% efficiency and heat at 25% efficiency through a chemical reaction for total efficiency of 85%. This is around twice as efficient as previous micro CHP units.

The delegates moved on to hear Jon Cape talk through our unique funded solution with typical yearly savings of £7,377 and our Self funded solution which has a typical ten year rate of return of 8-13% with a payback of 6 years on an investment of £16-17K.

We have already received several formal expressions of interest so contact us now if you are interested in BlueGen before the first round of funding is gone.
